Qiu Zhijie is an artist, teacher, calligrapher, curator, theorist, and museum director; for him, all of these roles are related to that of cartographer. Map of Technological Ethics is one of an ongoing series of hand-drawn conceptual maps which constitute an attempt to systematize the artist’s accumulated experience and knowledge. He draws on the philosophy and techniques of Chinese ink painting to organize his research, theories, writings and imaginings into geographic form. Here, the viewer encounters a landscape of the ethical and moral challenges and dilemmas surrounding technological development. In the Chinese context of technological accelerationism, Qiu’s work raises sensitive questions about how to guide choices and directions for new technological developments.
